Our 5 Year Plan

At the Marie Collins Foundation we want children to be safe and free from harm when on the internet, for example when using social media, or playing games.

We do this by:

Advocacy:

We tell governments, teachers, and organisations that work with children how best to support children who have been sexually abused online.  We do this by talking to our group of people who have been sexually abused themselves to find out how they would have liked to have been helped at the time.

Education:

We teach and train a lot of people who work with children about how best to respond to technology-assisted child sexual abuse. We train people around the world ranging from the police, social workers, teacher, doctors and nurses to government agencies.

Innovation:

We research the best ways of helping children who have been sexually abused online. We also work with other organisations to campaign for keeping children safe when using technology.

Recovery:

We want everyone who has been harmed online during their childhood to get support to help them recover. We do this by working directly with them and their families and by advising people already working with these families. We also provide information for children, their families and workers.

Mission Statement

All the staff at Marie Collins Foundation want to make sure that when police, social workers, teachers and other people are helping a child or young person who has been hurt or exposed to online sexual content that they don’t make the child or young person feel worse.

We help children, young people, and their families to with ways that can help with recovering for the hurt that has been caused.  We do this by ‘advocacy’ which means that we can support people in expressing their views, and what they would like to happen. As an advocate we can also help people know what support they are entitled to and help challenge if people are not doing what they should be doing.

The other way we help is though education, by people who work with children by training them on how best to help a child who has been affected by sexual abuse and creating information for them to look at on helping children and families who have been sexually harmed.

We also:

    • Talk to people who make the laws and decide on how best to respond to sexual abuse that happens online or via technology.
    • Where we think that the ways in which people help families are wrong, we will tell them the better way to help people.
    • Ask people that have been harmed online how best they wanted helping and then make sure those that help children know what people who have been harmed want.
